NEW TO BOXING?
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE A BOXER TO START BOXING.
Walking into a boxing gym for the first time can feel intimidating.
Maybe you've never thrown a punch. Maybe you're worried everyone else will know what they're doing. Maybe you're not in the shape you'd like to be in yet. Or maybe you've always wanted to learn boxing and simply never knew where to start.
Start here.
Blu Corner is an authentic boxing gym, but being a real boxing gym doesn't mean you have to already be a boxer to walk through our doors.
Teaching you is our job.
WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT?
-Your first class isn't a test.
Nobody expects you to know how to stand, punch, move, wrap your hands or understand boxing terminology. We'll start with the fundamentals and teach you how to do things correctly.
Depending on the class, you'll work on things like:
Boxing stance and movement
Basic punches and combinations
Defense
Footwork
Heavy bag work
Boxing drills
Conditioning
You'll train at your current level and build from there.
AM I GOING TO GET HIT?
-No.
This is one of the most important things for new members to understand. Boxing Basics is a no-contact class.
You can learn authentic boxing technique, hit the bags, work with coaches, improve your conditioning and develop your skills without sparring.
As you progress, other classes may introduce controlled contact and eventually sparring for appropriately experienced boxers.
But you will never be thrown into sparring simply because you joined a boxing gym.
Sparring is part of boxing. It is not your first step.
DO I NEED TO GET IN SHAPE FIRST?
-Absolutely not.
You don't get in shape for boxing and then start. Boxing helps you get in shape. People come to Blu with different fitness levels, ages, abilities and goals. Your conditioning will develop as you train.
You may get tired during your first few classes. That's okay. Take the breaks you need, keep learning and come back.
WHAT SHOULD I BRING?
Wear comfortable athletic clothing and athletic shoes that allow you to move.
Bring water.
We have loaner gloves you can use while you get your own. Mouth guard and hand wraps are sold at the gym.
And come ready to learn.
WHICH CLASS SHOULD I TAKE?
-Start with Boxing Basics.
If you have little or no boxing experience, Boxing Basics is where we recommend beginning.
It's designed to teach the foundation of the sport in a no-contact environment.
As your skills develop, your coaches can help you determine when you're ready to move into Boxing Fundamentals and, if that's your goal, eventually advanced or competitive boxing.
BOXING BASICS → FUNDAMENTALS → ADVANCED / COMPETITION
There's no rush. Learn it correctly first.
WHAT IF I NEVER WANT TO FIGHT?
-That's completely fine.
You don't have to compete—or even spar—to benefit from learning boxing.
Some Blu members want to compete. Others want to improve their fitness, learn a real skill, challenge themselves, build confidence or simply enjoy training. You can learn real boxing without wanting to become a competitive boxer.
WHAT IF I DO WANT TO FIGHT?
-Then you've come to a gym where that path exists too.
Blu Corner develops competitive boxers and provides advanced training for athletes who want to pursue amateur or professional competition.
But you don't have to make that decision today. First, learn how to box. If competition becomes your goal, we'll help you understand what comes next.
WILL I FEEL OUT OF PLACE?
This is probably the question people don't always ask out loud.
Blu Corner has beginners, recreational members, kids, adults and competitive fighters sharing the same gym.
Our members come from different backgrounds and have different reasons for being here.
What they have in common is that they came here to learn and work.
You don't have to prove that you belong before you walk through the door.
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN I ARRIVE?
Come a little early for your first class.
Check in and let us know it's your first time.
We'll help you get situated, answer your questions and point you in the right direction.
Then you'll do the same thing every boxer has done since the beginning:
Start with the basics.
YOUR FIRST STEP
You don't need experience.
You don't need to be in perfect shape.
You don't need to know how to wrap your hands.
You don't need to know whether you'll ever want to spar or compete.
You just need to start.
We'll teach you from there.
Still have questions?
We'd rather you ask than let uncertainty keep you from trying something you've always wanted to do.
